As
we headed south from Calais, Jane headed north. We both arrived
at Amiens within half an hour of each other at 2 o'clock.
Amiens
is on the Somme and has played a significant part in recent history.
The countryside around the town is peppered with memorials to fallen
soldiers of the 1914-1918 war.
Jane
and Luke both looked exhausted. Not helped as they arrived two hours
before their luggage. Luke's face was sunken, gaunt and had all
the hallmarks of dehydration. Jane, limping from the pain, tired,
but still managed a sprint when she saw Steven.
Amiens
is a beautiful city with a splendid cathedral. Little waterways
with pavements running alongside have a similar feel to Amsterdam.
The weather is perfect, clear skies with a pleasant temperature,
rather than the overpowering heat that summer can bring.
With
only two days left to cycle in France there is a real feel that
the ride is coming home. This is partly emphasised because calls
from the British media have risen dramatically.
We
are all on a real push to get the fundraising to £100,000
by the time they get home. The clock is ticking and I suspect the
chances of doing this are 50/50.
