Thursday
6 May 2004 - Siena to Florence
An
invigorating 49 mile cycle through the Tuscan hills from Sienna
to Florence has been the highlight of the journey so far.
Jane
was no where near a 100% yesterday morning but her health improved
throughout the day. They were today met at journey's end by the
British Consul in Florence who had been alerted to Jane's arrival
by the embassy in Rome.
Commonly
viewed as the most beautiful city in Italy it was always likely
to be a high point. Jane and Luke finished in sufficient time to
be able to walk across the Ponte Vecchio and climb 463 steps to
the top of the Duomo.

Approaching
Florence |
So
far 209 miles have been covered and there is a sense of anticipation
that the difficult days are now about to commence. Now that Florence
has been reached the tandem will head towards the Northern Italian
coast and from then on to the French border.
If
you are thinking the route has been planned with scientific precision
for the quickest journey back to Leeds, then think again.
Sienna
and Florence were chosen because Jane wanted to visit them. Lucca
where tomorrow's stage finishes because the cameraman on the ride
shares an office from someone who was born in the town. I'm thankful
it was only Lucca or who knows where they'd have finished up.
Tomorrow's
stage is 70 miles which will be a little bit of a slog. Jane says
it should be flat!!
