Tuesday
4 May 2004 - Viterbo to Pienza
Pienza
was built as a utopian 'new town'. Fortunately for Jane this 'new
town' was built over three years starting in 1459 rather than what
the imagination conjures up in the English sense. Jane has cycled
into Tuscany and Pienza is a typical hill town, population of 2500
with a duomo and papal palace.
The
scenery is similar to the Yorkshire Dales and the weather matched
with a wet day and mist. Jane is feeling easier and in less pain
than the weekend and although the distance covered, 80 miles, was
a challenge the gradients were less severe than day one.
Buoyed
by the knowledge that the fund-raising is better than could have
been imagined Jane's confidence is high. Reality though will soon
sink in and the honeymoon period of the start will fade as the muscles
ache.
Tomorrow
is a very short day as Jane had a passionate desire to stay in Siena,
one of the most beautiful towns in Europe and home to the Palio.
So feel no sympathy tomorrow as the rest of us slog at work her
feet are likely to be enjoying an Italian siesta...
