The Cubitt Patent Sails on the ground, next to the cap.
The Cubitt Patent Sails and fantail were hoisted on the windmill in September 1989. William Cubbit developed his "Patent Sails" in 1807. They were new because they could be corrected in accordance with the wind by a "striking rod". This meant the sails did not need to be stopped, unlike all previous sail designs.
