Bob Dylan and children

Forever young

By Paul Coslett
A group of Liverpool children who were pictured with Bob Dylan in the 1960鈥檚 are tracked down 40 years on.

In 1966 Bob Dylan was touring the UK in what would be his most controversial series of concerts.

Dylan had recently gone electric and many of his fans saw it as a betrayal of his folk roots. During his appearance at the Manchester Free Trade Hall one member of the audience showed his anger by shouting 鈥淛udas!鈥 at Dylan.

It was during this tour that Dylan visited Liverpool and was captured on film sitting in a doorway surrounded by local children.

Liverpool Dylan fan Chris Hockenhull was fascinated by the photograph and decided to track down the children in the picture. Accompanied by 蜜芽传媒 Inside Out reporters he set out to discover what happened to the ten children.

The man who took the photograph Barry Feinstein from Life magazine recalls the occasion; 鈥淲e were down in this area and all these kids were around. I said to Bob 鈥楲et鈥檚 have a picture of them鈥. The kids all sort of gathered around him and filled in the spaces. He was just sitting there. I think he was enjoying it. He likes kids.鈥

The location in the photograph still exists, in Dublin Street, close to Liverpool鈥檚 Dock Road. The picture was taken on 14 May 1966, Dylan was playing Liverpool's Odeon Theatre that evening. In the afternoon when the photograph was taken Everton were completing one of the greatest FA Cup Final comebacks against Sheffield Wednesday at Wembley. Many of the children's parents were watching the game so they were left to play in the local streets.

Barry Fernstein says he鈥檚 always been intrigued by what became of the children in the photograph; 鈥淲hatever happened to the kids? Where are they? Are they alive? Are they dead? Are they doctors? Are they soldiers? Are they musicians?

鈥淭hey didn鈥檛 know who we were. We were like aliens that came in. They were all kind of waifs. They weren鈥檛 your Beverley Hills kids.鈥

Chris Hockenhull found Bernadette Gill one of the girls in the photograph who still lives locally.听She was able to remember the names of all of the other children.

Armed with Bernadette's information Chris managed to track down all ten of the children and persuaded eight of them to return to the steps in Dublin Street they'd perched on 40 years previously to recreate the photograph.
