Wirral Council has become the first local authority in the North West to introduce an emission-free, internal delivery service using a special bicycle. The bicycle, which can carry up to 250kg, will carry out internal deliveries between council offices which would previously have been done by council vans or staff in their own cars. "It's a contribution to try and reduce the amount of emissions we put in to the atmosphere," says Steve Maddox, Wirral MBC Chief Executive.

Council courier Rod Lester, who is also a member of Wirral Cycling Campaign Group will ride the bicycle covering up to 40 miles each day. "It's quite a successful operation," says Rod. "It does have an electrically assisted motor that helps you get up some of the hills we have between Wallasey and Birkenhead. The introduction of the bicycle delivery service is part of Wirral Council's Local Agenda 21 programme, a local element of a United Nations initiative to protect and preserve the environment. |
