his support band at the Meltdown fest - where they had a song dedicated
specially to them - they can also count the Modfather Paul Weller
as a fan and mentor.

They
are The Ordinary Boys, the spiky four-piece from the sleepy coastal
town of Worthing whose debut album Over The Counter Culture
(B-Unique) has come crashing, impressively, into the album charts.

We
had vocalist/guitarist Preston and guitarist William from the band
drop in recently for an acoustic session.
I was impressed by both their style and intelligence, which is always
a good sign that these young meteors could have the potential to
go the distance in this crazy business we call show!

Any
band that takes its cue from the vital power pop of The Smiths,
The Jam, 2-Tone and Billy Bragg (you can hear the Barking Bard's
influence big time in Preston's voice) is going to have to be pretty
dire for me not to get excited!

So
I was pleased to discover that their debut is, overall, an effective
collection from a bunch of chaps who remember to add their own dynamic
to a well-worn genre.
Highlights
for me include 'Maybe Someday', 'Robots And Monkeys', 'Just A Song'
and 'Week In Week Out'.
Definitely worth checkin' and I look forward to seeing them when
they play the Electric Ballroom in October.
