Theatreland paid tribute to the late Freddie Mercury and the songs of Queen with Tuesday's world premiere of the musical We Will Rock You.

The futuristic £7.5m production, six years in the making, is based on Queen's extensive back catalogue and best-known hits - Bohemian Rhapsody, Radio Ga Ga and I Want To Break Free.

It has been written by comedian and author Ben Elton and is being produced by Hollywood legend Robert De Niro.

The plot portrays a world where musical instruments have been banned and programmed music dominates. But a young hero, Galileo, leads a group of rebels in a quest to find mythical electric guitars which were set in stone many years earlier.

Actor Nigel Planer, who starred in The Young Ones and the Comic Strip, is one of the show's stars.

Among those at the opening at London's Dominion Theatre were Robert De Niro, Brian May, Roger Taylor, Ben Elton, Ulrika Jonsson, Claire Sweeney, Steven Berkoff, Roger Daltrey, Johnny Vegas, Mel Smith and Gary Kemp.

Freddie MercuryQueen were one of the biggest bands in the world in the late 1970s and 1980s but lost their main creative force and lead singer Freddie Mercury, when he died in 1991.

Last week the band's Bohemian Rhapsody was voted the UK's best single of all time in a poll of music fans. The pop epic beat John Lennon's Imagine and Hey Jude by The Beatles in the survey by the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles.
