Thirteen Senses at Academy 2 - 6/10

CN (gig: 02/03/05)
Having seen Thirteen Senses at the very start of their career at the Roadhouse last year, I didn’t hold my breath for them to have improved as much as their sudden increase in popularity suggests.

It was obvious from the start of the group’s set that the record company sheen that turns bands from rusty, inexperienced rabbles into highly polished performers was clearly there.

Thirteen Senses arrived very confident and launched straight into their first slice of melodic indie. There were a few songs that stood out from the rest, yet for every good moment, there were also some weaker tunes thrown in which made for a very stop-start set.

Ultimately the band never really got into a flow, which is a shame because the more stand-out tracks were extremely well received by the sell out crowd. The singer’s rapport with the crowd was also notable with him frequently thanking us for coming and mentioning how this was only the third gig they have ever sold out (previous ones being only small venues).

The band’s two song encore finished with what is still their best song, Thru The Glass, a rip roaring piece of guitar melodica that could grace any dark, sweaty indie club. The problem for Thirteen Senses is that I said exactly the same thing last summer at the Roadhouse and there only seems to be a minor progression since then. Though, as tonight proves, the band’s popularity seems to be increasing and surely with that their overall musical quality will also improve.
