The Soundtrack Of Our Lives at Academy 3 - 9/10

Chris Long (gig: 04/03/05)
Looming large in his bushy beard and kaftan, Ebbot Lundberg leant into his microphone. "Welcome to the penthouse," he grinned as his band mates launched into another powerful slice of rock and roll.

The penthouse, as he put it, was a packed Academy 3, presumably a little small for his tastes after the band’s last visit to the city, opening to an equally stowed out Old Trafford for Oasis. Still, if he or the rest of the mighty Soundtrack Of Our Lives were disappointed, they didn’t show it.

The Swedish six piece are a band founded on the very basics of rock and roll, unashamed to crash their influences together in a smorgasbord of Who riffs, Stones beats and psychedelic melodies.

From the burning Believe I’ve Found and pounding Heading for A Breakdown, both hoisted from the band’s latest long player Origin Vol. 1, to the unstoppable charge of Infra Riot and the gentler rumble of Ten Years Ahead, heaved off their breakthrough Behind The Music, TSOOL were on top form.

Indeed, it could have been the size of venue that gave them their edge. Packed as closely onto the stage as the crowd in the room before them, they were a ball of blazing energy, punching out song after song, whipping up a roaring retort from the assembled.

Then, with a grin and a wink from the ever imposing Lundberg, they were gone, rattling guitars and echoing keyboards wincing from their exertions on the stage. On this showing, it should be the Gallaghers that warm things up for them.
