Mylo at the Academy - 9/10Steven Long (gig: 29/10/05)
For an artist whose album is called Destroy Rock & Roll, the Academy was a very strange choice, as it’s the cradle of all things rock round here, and leads us to ask: just how would Mylo bend the grimy context of this venue to his varied electronica? |
| Luckily, for the masses of gig-goers on this unseasonably barmy Saturday night, it didn’t prove a question that was difficult to answer as Mylo treated us to a total tune-fest and created the sort of intimacy found more often in late-night bars and clubs. He was helped by his band and the sound-mix, vital to any good dance night. Additionally there was a light and slideshow for the minority who weren’t bothering to dance. The shaping-throwing majority, however, were swept along by the funky grandeur of Mylo’s music, with Paris Four Hundred and a hugely magnificent Drop the Pressure being the highlights. Every big chorus was met by cheers, a million hands in the air and total jubilation that wouldn’t have been out of place at the Glastonbury Festival or Ibiza. It may not have been Mylo’s mission to destroy rock and roll on Saturday night, but let me tell you, he joyously killed it stone dead! Agree it was a great gig, but being made to wait until past midnight, for a set that was little over an hour long was slightly disappointing. We wanted more of the good stuff!
