Daywalkers at Jabez Clegg - 7/10

Sarah-Jane Steele (gig: 15/02/06)
Daywalkers took the night by crashing metal-thunder-spitting-lightening storm at the modish student dive, Jabez Clegg.

Daywalkers have been compared to the likes of Prodigy live and, of late, been iconically labelled as a fresh ray of light in the otherwise plush, yet dark indie clouds.

Ok, so I don’t rhyme as well as quick and slick maestro Tonn, frontman of Daywalkers, that towering mass of a man who finds a host of superlatives and “straight off the top of my head freestylin’”.

His three disciples, Dom, Robin and Phil started off with subtle strums on the guitar and formulaic adherences but by song three, the brutal Scoundrel, the boys deviated put the dirty and the rotten in that tune and stepped up a gear for the rest of the set.

Bands like Daywalkers have thrived in North America for years but for the moment, here in Manchester, this was an epiphany, a smorgasbord of new age sounds resounding from beneath the sheath of black fabric that engulfed the stage.

This is not a group to stand idly by and assimilate their way to fame in a town filled with sneakers and skinny jeans. For one night only, the indies and the metal cowboys found some common ground in Daywalkers.
