Generating creativity and hope from waste

For World Environment Day, we’re highlighting a project turning waste into designer decor in Freetown, Sierra Leone

Mohamed A Kamara, the co-founder and manager of Freetown Innovation Lab, is recycling discarded tyres and other waste, transforming it into bespoke furniture - and empowering young people to get involved.

When everyone sees it as a problem, we see it as an opportunity."

The World Bank estimates that around 130,000 tonnes of plastic waste is generated every year in Sierra Leone - currently, less than 6% is recycled.
