Matthew Fletcher's diary

A teenager who died from leukaemia shared his moving story in a series of recordings for ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio Norfolk. Matthew Fletcher made an audio diary capturing his thoughts before and after his bone marrow transplant, writes radio producer Lyn McKinney.

In summer 2006, 15-year-old Matthew Fletcher and his family came onto ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio Norfolk's breakfast show to talk about his forthcoming bone marrow transplant in Bristol.Ìý

He'd been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia the previous autumn, had already spent time in Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, and was facing a major operation to save his life.

Positive attitude

Presenter Stephen Bumfrey and I were so impressed with Matthew's very positive attitude and his genuine interest in how radio was made, he was an obvious candidate to record an audio diary for us.

We fully expected Matthew to undergo his transplant, spend time recovering and then bring his diary into Radio Norfolk for us to hear and later on, broadcast.

So it was with great sadness that we learned of Matthew's death at his home in Cawston, near Aylsham, in late November.Ìý

Parents' wish

However, his parents, Clare and John Fletcher, were keen that his diary should go to air nonetheless.

It wasn't until Steve and I heard the diary just as it was recorded that we realised we had the entire story of Matthew's brave journey through his last few months, right up until a few days before his untimely death.

Zest for life

We weren't the only ones Matthew had impressed - it seems everyone who came into contact with him remarked on his amazing zest for life and his upbeat attitude towards his life-threatening illness.Ìý

Matthew set up a website lemonjelly.moonfruit.com so that friends could keep in touch with his progress, unsurprising I suppose for a teenager who wanted to become an engineer, and who adored technology.

Music lover

He also loved his music, and learned to play a mean guitar, according to his parents, though he missed out playing with other friends at school because he was in hospital so much.

The diary faithfully records Matthew's excitement as his transplant drew near, the details of the day itself - including how it felt to have his mother's cells transplanted into him.

Disease returns

It also documents the weeks that followed the operation as he fought off a viral infection, and his ultimate elation at being released from hospital, before the doctors tell him the leukaemia cells have returned.

The last few entries of this 16-year-old are most moving and very humbling, as he talks frankly about his imminent death with his mother.

I have just listened to Matthew's diary. I was a very close childhood friend of Matthew's Mum Clare and his Aunties Alison & Lisa. To me as a child they all inspired and they were a lovely close family. As children and young adults both Clare & Alison were supporters of good causes and it seems that Matthew inherited some fantastic qualities. Clare I can't even imagine your loss, but I send my heartfelt sympathies to you and all of your wonderful family. You must be as proud of him as your Mum & Dad were of you, Alison & Lisa. I miss you all very much. I am running in the race for life this year and will be dedicating my run to Matthew.

God bless you Matthew, and your family. I lost my wife 3 years ago with a brain tumour after 37 years of marriage and was told that time would heal. The scars do fade, and life does go on,but one can,of course, never fully recover. Forgive me for compairing the situations but may I suggest that the awful experiance you have suffered will lead to an calm appreciation of the life you shared as a family. God bless, you have had a very brave son.

After listening to Matthew's diary.I was very moved,he was an inspiration to others, and very courageous. My husband had the same type of Leukaemia and had a bone marrow translant at Addenbrooke's hospital at Cambridge with his sisters donated marrow.I remember how difficult this time was and my heart feels so sad for both Matthew and his family. We were fortunate that my husband Mark survived. It is now twelve years since the transplant. Please send our good wishes to Matthew's brave and loving family. We realise how difficult this time must be for them. With good wishes from Mark and Samantha Aldis.

Was at work this morning feeling fed up,my wife died in 20 mins, no notice, 3yrs ago, I have a life, a job, a lady friend. Hearing the last part was a reminder of how lucky I am, that brave, unselfish lad reminded me of that, to be so close to death and think of others, there are no words to do it justice. Thank you, Matthew, your Mum and Dad, and superb handling of such moving material by Radio Norfolk, thank you, Bob

What an inspirational lad this boy was. I listened live without realising he was going to die until the end of part 4 and I could not believe that life could be so cruel and unfair to such a person with so much zest for life and so much good in him. I am a hard bitten 60 year old lawyer and I am typing this with tears in my eyes. It is so sad that in a world filled with whingers and whiners crying over nothing we have to lose people with so much to give and with so much compassion for others. God bless you Matthew and I hope for your sake there really is a heaven becauase you certainly earned your place there.

Hi I am Matthew's aunt, Clare Fletcher's sister. Thank you for featuring Matthew's audio diary. It is painful as we listen and remember just how much we miss Matthew and his great smile, he was a very special person. What gives us strength and makes us so proud is to think that Matthew continues to have such a great impact and should urge everyone not to take our daily lives for granted. One of Matthew's regrets before he died was that he would never get a chance to make a difference in the world as he wanted to help people build in poorer countries when he qualified as an engineer. How wrong he was - he continues to do more than most people in can do living to a ripe old age. Sam's House, which Matthew mentions, in Bristol was built and is funded totally from donations from CLIC Sargent and it would be great if you could feature this charity's website with Anthony Nolan Trust on this page. Thank you again for your support and fantastic feature on Matthew. Brilliantly done!

I am Matthew's maternal grandmother and I would just like to say how grateful I am to you for publishing Matthew's diary in the hope that it makes people aware of this terrible illness and the need of more bone marrow donors which are vital for any hope of a possible cure. Matthew was very brave and I am so proud of the way he accepted his illness and just got on with it without any fuss. He is sorely missed.
