Tell Me A Story Granda

by John McMenamin

Tell me a story Gran’da
Before I go to bed
The old man, sat down on a seat
And scratched his grizzled head.

He’d told the story, many times
The wee lad, loved the tale
“Once upon a time” he said
His voice was weak and frail.

“Once upon a time” said he
“When I was young and gay
I went one night to Windsor Park
To see Norn Iron play”.

“What happened then”? the wee boy said
Cause he knew the story well
“Now, lie down son”, his Gran’da said
“And the story I will tell”.

“Times were hard” his Gran’da said
And I was on the dole
But one night son in Windsor Park
Norn Iron, scored a goal.

“Scored a goal?” the wee boy said
“Did they put it in the net?”
“They scored a goal” his Gran’da said
Now sleep tight my wee pet.

The wee lad couldn’t sleep that night
He lay listening to the rain
And wondered, would he ever see
Norn Iron score again.

He knew his Gran’da loved him
He was the apple of his eye
But did his Gran’da tell a fairy tale
Was the story, all a lie?

At last, he closed his little eyes
And slumbered in the dark
And saw, Norn Iron, score a goal
In his dreams, in Windsor Park.
