Where to improve

Results overall

At the end of the questionnaire there was opportunity for people to tell us anything else important to them or their family that the ѿý could offer or improve in the future. This was a free-text box where respondents could write their comments.

There were over half a million comments covering the full range of views on all aspects of what the ѿý does.

The biggest topics which respondents mentioned included:

Out of 872,701 respondents:

Programmes, content and online services = 28%

Including views on specific genres (e.g. news, sport, entertainment, drama and content for different parts of the UK) and services (e.g. the ѿý’s digital products); the overall quality or variety of ѿý output; and the balance of original programming versus repeats.

Impartiality and bias = 25%

Including concerns about bias and calls for more balance, and feedback on the importance of impartiality.

TV licence fee and funding = 17%&Բ;

Diversity, representation and inclusion = 11%&Բ;

The topics which respondents cited were consistent across age groups with some differences in order.

By age group, respondents aged 55 and over were more inclined than younger age groups to give views on the ѿý’s programmes, content and online services. This was the most mentioned subject for this age group, while among those aged 18-34 and 35-54 it was second-most mentioned.

Impartiality and bias was the top-cited theme for respondents aged 18-34 and 35-54, and second-most cited by those aged 55 and over. That said, more respondents aged 55 and over left comments in general than younger respondents did which means this topic was raised by a similar proportion of respondents in all three age groups (around a quarter).

Respondents aged 35-54 were more inclined than the other age groups to give views on the TV licence fee and funding – mentioned by 21% of this age group compared with 15% of respondents aged 18-34 and 15% of those aged 55 and over.

Meanwhile, respondents aged 55 and over were more likely than younger respondents to comment on the running of the ѿý as an organisation (raised by 17% of those aged 55 and over compared with 11% of those aged 18-34), and also a little more inclined to express views on diversity, representation and inclusion (raised by 12% of those aged 55 and over compared with 9% of those aged 18-34).

There was also consistency in the topics that respondents from different parts of the UK raised.

By location, programmes, content and online services was the most-cited theme in all but one of the Nations and regions of England. The exception was in Northern Ireland where impartiality and bias was mentioned most often, followed by programmes, content and online services. This difference in order was more the result of a slightly lower percentage of respondents in Northern Ireland giving views on programmes, content and online services rather than a higher percentage mentioning impartiality and bias. The highest percentage of respondents by Nation and region mentioning impartiality and bias were in London (28%) – though this was still a close second to programmes, content and online services as the subject most mentioned by respondents there (29%).

By geography, respondents in Scotland were most inclined (14%) to give views on diversity, representation and inclusion.

Respondents in Northern Ireland and the North of England were more inclined to express views on the TV licence fee and funding (20% in these parts of the UK) than those in London and also the South of England (c.15%).
