held its first free festival for "lesbian, gay, bisexual,
and transgender" people over May bank holiday weekend.

Oxford
Pride followed in the path blazed by similar events in Reading,
Brighton and Birmingham.

The
event had the backing of the city council, which promoted
it as part of its Fun in the Parks series.
