Simon Rattle and Beethoven top ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Music Magazine's survey results

52% of people claim that hearing classical music on a TV ad would make them want to buy the music on CD.

This is just one of the findings from a quirky reader survey by ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Music Magazine into music listening habits and tastes. The April issue (on-sale 11th March) reveals a picture of the UK's favourite tunes, musicians and radio stations.

73% of respondents claimed that classical music generally gives them a lift and just over half said it made them feel tranquil. However, ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Music Magazine discovered that only 13% of men and women said that classical music makes them feel sexy.

A staggering 99% of people said that life would be impoverished without classical music.

Given a choice between Simon Rattle, Luciano Pavarotti, Nigel Kennedy, Lesley Garrett, Cecilia Bartoli and Kylie Minogue, 75% of men picked Simon Rattle as the musician they would most like to be. Even 28% of women claimed they would like to be Simon Rattle but he was toppled by the famous soprano Cecilia Bartoli who claimed 44% of the female vote.

Only 3% of respondents wanted to be pop queen Kylie (two-thirds of these were men!) and just 5% chose Pavarotti.

The top things to do while listening to music include cooking (83%), cleaning (77%), entertaining (61%) and sitting in the bath (57%). 33% of men claimed they listened to music while surfing the internet.

ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Music Magazine also found that TV ads were a source of classical music inspiration with over half claiming that hearing classical music on a TV ad would make them want to buy the CD.

When it came to deciding on which station to listen to while preparing a meal ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio 3 came tops with 32% of votes. ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio 3 faired best again with 54% of people claiming they prefer to listen to the station while spending the evening in an armchair.

42% plucked Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 from a list of music they would most like to hear above Handel, Chopin and arch-modernist Harrison Birtwistle.

Notes to Editors:
ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Music Magazine is the world's best-selling monthly classical music magazine, with a monthly circulation of 70,006 (ABC: Jan to Dec 2002) and is published by ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Magazines.
