When Michael asks the actor about his career, Mel says: “What happens to the time? All my children are taller than I am now… not hard!” He then says to Michael: “I’d like to clear up a rumour. We’re about the same size - stand up.” After demonstrating they are the same height - at 5 feet, 11 inches - Mel then jokes to the audience: “Now either [Michael’s] a runt like me or they’re lying about all of us!” He continues, pointing to his shoes: “And there are no lifts!”

Mel talks to Michael Parkinson Michael then asks Mel about his marriage, asking him if he knows what women want? Mel answers: “After 22 years of marriage, I got about two things [I’ve learned about what women want] that I know now - I’m so thick! One is, flowers work and the other is, let her help!”

On a more serious note, Mel reveals the moment he realised he had a drinking problem - when he was on the set of Mad Max 3: Beyond The Thunderdome with his co-star Tina Turner. He says: “[Tina], she saw it first hand. She stayed with a man who was horrible to her, and she’d seen it. She saw me and handed me a photograph of myself one day, and she’d written on it with an eyebrow pencil or something, she said, ‘Don’t F this up’ on the picture. And I thought, ‘what did she mean?’ But it wasn’t too long after that that I figured out what she meant."

On next weekÂ’s Parkinson are Dame Judi Dench, Kevin Spacey, Rory Bremner and music from The Lighthouse Family.

The Executive Producer of Parkinson is Bea Ballard.
