Record-breaking figures yet again for Wales' ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ radio stations

After recording its highest ever number of listeners in the first quarter of the year, ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio Wales has now broken its record for share of all radio listening in Wales.

Radio Wales' share of 9.9 per cent is its highest ever measured by the current RAJAR system.

ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio Cymru's share of total listening leapt to 4.6 per cent – it has not been higher for more than two years.

Radio Cymru's share of listening by Welsh speakers is also at a two-year high.

The time spent listening to each station has also reached spectacular levels.

On average each Radio Wales listener tuned in for more than 11 hours each week during the second quarter of the year while the average Radio Cymru listener spent an incredible 15.5 hours per week listening to the Welsh language station – the highest figure for any radio station in Wales.

Julie Barton, Editor, Radio Wales, said: "We have had great success in building the audience for Radio Wales over the last 12 to 18 months.

"For instance, presenters like Jamie Owen and Nicola Heywood-Thomas have seen their audience grow steadily quarter after quarter.

"What we are also seeing is that people like what they hear on Radio Wales and they are listening for longer and longer."

Aled Glynne, Editor, Radio Cymru, said: "Today's figures are very good news for Radio Cymru.

"We changed our schedule quite substantially last year and these figures are a sign that the listeners have become familiar with and welcome the changes.

"In particular, it's good to see Hywel a Nia doing so well with people enjoying the way the programme includes live broadcasts from different areas of Wales each morning."

With Radio 1, Radio 2 and Five Live all strengthening, ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ radio stations now account for more than 60 per cent of all listening in Wales – the highest figure for a number of years - while the share of listening to Wales' independent local radio stations fell.

Notes to Editors

ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio Wales averaged 476,000 listeners per week during the second quarter of 2003 – a year-on-year increase of 70,000.

ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio Cymru averaged 159,000 listeners per week – up 15,000 on the first quarter of the year.

ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio strong share performance despite increased competition
