First time buyers' property blues

Please credit Inside Money on ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio 4

A nurse from Oxfordshire will feature on ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio 4's award-winning personal finance programme Inside Money on Saturday 9 August.

Vikki Smith, who is 27 and works on the trauma unit of the John Radcliffe hospital in Oxford, joins the programme to explore the problems facing first time buyers in the area.

Vikki has been renting a home for ten years in Witney and would like to buy a small flat.

However the rise in house prices has been so great that she fears she is now locked out of the housing market for good.

She says: "Five or six years ago, I could have bought a house in my area for around £60,000. They're now selling them for £160,000.

"I'm quite disillusioned and worried I will never own a place of my own."

Vikki wants to stay in Oxfordshire, where she grew up, doing a job that she loves. But like many other essential workers in the public services, she fears she'll have to move to where property is more affordable.

She joins Inside Money to find out what the chances are of her owning her own home.

In the course of the programme, she gets the chance to challenge the new Housing Minister, Keith Hill MP, about what the government is doing to help people like her. She also asks him what he would do if he were in her shoes.

Inside Money: First time blues can be heard on ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio Four on Saturday 9 August at noon and is repeated on Monday 11 August at 3.00pm.
