Audiences across the East Midlands get a chance to vote for their top sporting heroes in the region, as nominations open today (Tuesday 20 July) for this year's ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ East Midlands Sports Awards.

This year the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ has teamed up with East Midlands Development Agency and Sport England.

Ìý

The awards take place at the Nottingham Council House on Sunday 5 December.

The East Midlands boasts world class sports facilities and some of the world's finest competitors – including Olympic 2004 competitors Paula Radcliffe and James Gibson.

Ìý

There are also 10,000 sports clubs in the region, many relying on one or two volunteers for their survival.

Ìý

The judges need help in deciding 2004's winners.

Last year ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ East Midlands Sports Awards were presented to retired policeman, Chris Gamble, who has worked tirelessly to build a community sports complex in Melton, Leicestershire, and England's Rugby Team captain Martin Johnson - just days after he'd been presented the Rugby World Cup.

Sport England Regional Director Tim Garfield said: "We want the East Midlands to be the most successful sporting region in England."

Ìý

ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ East Midlands Sports editor Mark Shardlow adds: "The judging panel will meet at the beginning of November, and we're looking for inspiring people at all levels of sport. So please contact us with your nominations."

Ìý

Jeff Moore, Deputy Chief Executive of emda (East Midlands Development Agency), said: "As an agency that is responsible for improving the economy, wealth and profile of the East Midlands, we fully recognise the important role that sporting success has to play in our region and we are delighted to be involved once again."

Ìý

From today people across the region can have their say by logging onto bbc.co.uk/eastmidlandstoday or by writing to: ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ East Midlands Sports Awards, London Road, Nottingham, NG2 4UU.

Highlights will be shown on a special television programme on ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ ONE (East Midlands), and the ceremony will be broadcast live on ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radios Derby, Leicester, Lincolnshire and Nottingham, and streamed via their websites.
