Restoration results from second
programme revealed
Ìý
Speaking from Hampton Court Palace, Griff Rhys Jones
tonight revealed the nation had chosen Archbishop's Palace in the Kent
village of Charing to be the second building to go through to the final
of this year's ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ TWO series Restoration, winning more than 37% of
the votes cast.
Ìý
On Sunday (18 July), in the second episode of the new
series, Griff called on viewers to choose between Archbishop's Palace
and two other buildings – Strawberry Hill in Twickenham and Severndroog
Castle in Greenwich.
Ìý
The grade-one listed Archbishop's Palace has one of
the earliest examples of an English medieval great hall, dating from
the first decade of the 1300s.
Ìý
Today, it survives as a farm. If saved supporters of
the building plan to open the great hall for public use.
Ìý
Michael Houghton, Heritage Lottery Fund Manager for
South East England, said today: "These ancient ruins have seen
some truly historic events since its birth as a manor house and then
grand palace, and we're delighted that Archbishop's Palace has reached
the Restoration Final.
Ìý
"The Heritage Lottery Fund believes that creating
new uses for historic buildings is an ideal way to re-integrate them
into the life of the community and should be encouraged wherever possible.
Ìý
"This scheduled ancient monument could, with the
help of the viewing public and the Heritage Lottery Fund, be restored
to its former glory and become the heart of the community in Charing
and an attraction for all of Kent.
Ìý
"The Heritage Lottery Fund have set aside £2.5m
for The Restoration Fund to help restore the winner.
Ìý
"It would be great now if the people of the South
East could really get behind their finalist to save Archbishop's Palace
for future generations to enjoy."
Ìý
Tonight's result means that Archbishop's Palace will
become one of eight buildings to be featured in the live Restoration
Final at Hampton Court Palace on Sunday 8 August on ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ TWO.
Ìý
Here a nationwide vote will decide which building should
be given a new lease of life with money raised throughout the course
of the series.
Ìý
Tonight three more buildings were featured for viewers
to choose between, all in Wales – Cardigan Castle at the head of
the River Teifi in Cardigan; the Workingman's Institute and Memorial
Hall in Newbridge; and Llanfyllin Union Workhouse in Powys.
Ìý
This Sunday's episode of Restoration (25 July) will
reveal which of these will become the third building to go through to
the final.
Ìý
Lines are now open and viewers can vote by calling
09011 33 22 22.
Ìý
Voting lines are open for three days for each programme
from 2.00am on the day prior to transmission until midnight on the day
