Manchester's classical music fans won't have to travel to London to enjoy the pomp and circumstance of the Last Night of the Proms this year.

Ìý

Proms in the Park, jointly hosted by the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ and Manchester City Council, takes place at Cathedral Gardens next to Urbis on Saturday 11 September featuring a wealth of talent for a great evening's entertainment.

All 8,000 free tickets were snapped up in record time for the event but those who were not lucky enough to get a place can still listen to the festivities live on ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ GMR.

This year is the first time that Manchester has hosted a Prom in the Park.

Ìý

Other events are being staged this year in London's Hyde Park as well as in Belfast, Swansea and Glasgow.

Ìý

Each city will have its own distinctive concert before joining together for live relays of the famous finale of the Last Night of the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall.

Bill Morris, Project Director, ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Live Events, says: "Last year we held events in all four nations of the United Kingdom for the first time. So we didn't think things could get any better.

Ìý

"But this year we are delighted to welcome Manchester to the party as well, making this the biggest Last Night of the Proms celebration to date. Never before have we had five Proms events on one night."

Musical entertainment on the evening will be provided by the ±á²¹±ô±ôé and the ±á²¹±ô±ôé Choir conducted by John Wilson and Chetham's School of Music.

Ìý

Chetham's student and ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Young Musician of the Year 2002, violinist Jennifer Pike, will also be performing at the event hosted by ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ GMR presenter Heather Stott.

Conductor John Wilson said: "I'm delighted to be involved in this year's Proms in the Park concert - it's wonderful working with the ±á²¹±ô±ôé and I really love Manchester, it's almost my second home these days!

Ìý

"Manchester audiences are always so warm and responsive and I'm thrilled the concert is sold out – it should be a terrific evening."

Ìý

Digital satellite, Freeview and digital cable viewers can also tune in using the interactive service on their televisions.
