Regional heats kick off for ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ New Comedy Awards

ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ 7 and ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Talent will be holding regional heats for ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ New Comedy Awards from Monday 4 October 2004.


This year's hopefuls, chosen from more than 600 applicants, will be performing at some of the best comedy clubs around the UK.

The heats will be hosted by the finest comperes on the circuit, including: Alun Cochrane, nominated for the Perrier Best Newcomer Award at this year's Edinburgh Festival; Alfie Joey, one of the stars of Radio 4's Mitch Benn's Crimes Against Music who has just finished filming I Deal with Johnny Vegas; Frankie Boyle, a regular on the original Live Floor Show; Sony Award nominee Toby Foster; and former street performer turned stand-up extraordinaire Martin Bigpig.

Furthermore, admission is free.


Past winners and finalists include Peter Kay, Simon Pegg, Lee Mack, Marcus Brigstock, Nina Conti and Julian Barratt.

The ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ New Comedy Awards are part of ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Talent and ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ 7's commitment to igniting raw comedy talent.

Ìý

They comprise nationwide regional heats in October, with digital radio network ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ 7 following semi-finals held at Comedy Stores in Newcastle, London and Manchester in October and November.

Ìý

The final will be held at the Manchester Comedy Store in December and will be broadcast on ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ 7, with Radio 4 making a programme around it.

Ìý

The funniest comedians will win £2,000 and the opportunity to develop their writing with ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio Entertainment.

Ìý

There may also be the possibility of getting featured on Radio 1's new comedy show the Milk Run.
