Tribute to Alistair Cooke (1908 - 2004)

A Service of Thanksgiving for the life and work of Alistair Cooke KBE, organised by the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½, will be held at Westminster Abbey at noon today (Friday 15 October 2004).


More than 2,000 family members, colleagues and fans from around the world will attend.


The service will be conducted by The Very Reverend Dr Wesley Carr, Dean of Westminster.


The ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Concert Orchestra will play music by George Frideric Handel and Gilbert & Sullivan.


Jane Byrne Kittredge, the broadcaster's granddaughter, will play the second movement from one of JS Bach's violin concertos and Jacqui Dankworth will perform George and Ira Gershwin's Someone To Watch Over Me accompanied by David Gordon on piano.


The readings will be given by John Byrne Cooke, son, and Rebecca Eaton OBE, producer from Masterpiece Theatre.


Prayers will be led by The Reverend Susan Cooke Kittredge, daughter, and The Reverend Graeme Napier.


Mark Thompson, ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Director-General, and Peter Jennings, Senior Editor, ABC News, will pay tribute. (The text of Mark Thompson's address is available)


Following the service The Reverend Susan Cooke Kittredge will accept an award for Alastair Cooke from the Radio Academy, for his inclusion in the UK Radio Hall of Fame.
