Gloucester has been chosen as one of three venues across the country hosting a free concert celebrating the 25th anniversary of ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Children in Need.

The eyes of the nation will be on Gloucester, as live ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ cameras tune-in to broadcast parts of the concert at the Barbican Car Park, Ladybellegate Street.

Three chart-topping bands will perform alongside three local acts at the event, to be held on ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Children in Need night - Friday 19 November 2004.

Ìý

The starring acts will be announced nearer the time.

The entertainment extravaganza coincides with the hugely popular annual TV event on ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ ONE, hosted by Terry Wogan and Gaby Roslin.

Ìý

Viewers on ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ ONE will also see updates from the other two concerts being held in Hull and Carlisle.

Presenter Gaby Roslin says: "This is the 25th ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Children in Need show and, since 1980, the public has helped us to raise more than £300m, which is amazing.

Ìý

"I am delighted Gloucester will be hosting a massive outdoor concert this year and hope everyone comes along to make this special year a success."

Last year, the nationwide appeal raised a record-breaking £30m, from which ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Children in Need gave grants to registered charities, alongside voluntary and community groups, supporting youngsters aged 18 and under.

Ìý

They include children with disabilities or psychological disorders and those who have suffered from serious illness, abuse, poverty or neglect.

In Gloucestershire, 11 organisations received grants totalling £231,120.

Ìý

They included the Special Friends Club in Kingswood, which received a grant of £11,745 over three years to provide a variety of outings for children with learning difficulties.

Ìý

Share Young People's Counselling Service has received £8,400 over two years, helping to make counselling accessible to 11 to 14-year-olds in Gloucester.

Sarah-Jane Bungay, Children in Need producer for ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ West, says: "This is the fourth year that we have held major concerts in support of the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Children in Need Appeal.

Ìý

"These regional events reach and enthuse parts of the UK often overlooked by national broadcasters.

"It all culminates in a night of unmissable television on ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ ONE, in which the whole nation can feel a part of the fantastic fundraising that goes to help children in need of our support."

The Gloucester concert, being held at the several thousand capacity venue near the Docks, is supported by ASDA.

Councillor Martyn White, Gloucester City Council's Cabinet Member for Culture, Learning and Leisure, says: "The concert is great news for residents and great news for the city. It's set to be a great night and we hope residents and local businesses support the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Children in Need Appeal charity."

ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Children in Need employs no professional fundraisers and relies on the generosity and imagination of the public to raise money for children who desperately need help.

Every penny of every pound donated by the public goes to children who need it.

The ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½'s first broadcast appeal for children took place in 1927, in the form of a five-minute radio broadcast on Christmas Day.

Ìý

It raised about £1,143 which equates to about £27,150 by today's standards
