Forty per cent of voters back Clarke in Newsnight poll

Kennth Clarke would make the most popular Conservative leader according to a ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Newsnight/ICM poll of voters.

Ìý

Forty per cent favour Kenneth Clarke, with David Davis polling 10%; David Cameron and Malcolm Rifkind, 4% each; Liam Fox, 3%; and David Willetts, 2%.

Ìý

A significant 33% still did not know who they would like and 4% said they would like none of the above.

Ìý

Twenty per cent also said that they would be more likely to vote Conservative if Clarke led the party - with 8% saying they would be less likely to if he got the job.

Ìý

For David Davis, 7% said they would be more likely to vote Conservative if he was at the helm - but 10% said they would be less likely to with him in the job.

Ìý

For David Cameron, 3% said they would be more likely to vote Conservative with him as leader but 7% said they would be less likely.

ICM Research interviewed a random sample of 1,007 adults aged 18+ by telephone between 2 and 4 September 2005.
