Today the Culture Secretary, Tessa Jowell, spoke at the Royal Television Society convention in Cambridge and confirmed the digital switchover timetable.

The ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ responded: "The ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ warmly welcomes the Secretary of State's announcement. Switchover will ensure the benefits of digital will be available to every licence payer without having to pay a subscription.

"Building Digital Britain is one of the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½'s stated public purposes, endorsed in the Government's Green Paper on Charter Renewal. We have embraced this purpose since the beginning of digital broadcasting in the UK - through the launch of our digital services, the creation of Freeview and will continue to do so now with the final countdown to switchover itself.

"We will give our firm support to Digital UK (formerly SwitchCo) in its role of steering the UK through switchover. The Government has today laid out its expectations of the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ and these will form part of our discussions with the Government about the licence fee settlement this Autumn."
