The Ten O'Clock News has obtained new video evidence that United States forces in Iraq may
have been responsible for the deliberate killing of innocent civilians.
Ìý
The
video pictures appear to challenge the US military's account of events which
took place in the town of Ishaqi on 15 March 2006.
Ìý
Iraqi police have already accused American troops of the deliberate killing of
11 people, including five children, in a raid on a house in the town.
Ìý
The US
authorities say they were involved in a firefight after a tip-off that an al-Qaeda supporter was visiting the house.
Ìý
They have stated that the building
collapsed under heavy fire and bodies were found in the rubble.
Ìý
But the new video pictures - obtained from a hardline Sunni group which opposes
the coalition presence in Iraq - appear to contradict that initial US account. They show a number of dead adults and children.
Ìý
The ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ has compared the new
pictures with other footage of the incident which it knows to be genuine.
Ìý
The new
tape has not been tampered with and the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ believes it to be a genuine record of
events.
Ìý
The US authorities in Baghdad have told the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ today that there is an
ongoing investigation into the events at Ishaqi.
