ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Shropshire TV devotes week to religious knowledge

It has become a truism that today's children have a better understanding than adults about computers. Young people often find it easier to learn a new language. But do children also know more than their elders about religion?

Ìý

This is the central question posed by a local TV producer who set out on a pilgrimage to discover whether primary school children have a better understanding of religion than most adults.

Ìý

Everyday during its Faith Challenge Week (from Monday 26 June to Saturday 1 July), ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Shropshire TV concentrates on a different religion asking the young and the old questions about Hinduism, Christianity, Sikhism, Buddhism, Judaism and Islam.

Ìý

All of the results - which will come as a revelation to some - are broadcast on ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Shropshire TV.

Ìý

ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Shropshire TV's Faith producer, Andrew Horton, says, "Religious issues are in the news frequently these days, and yet it seems strange that it's children who seem to know more about the different faiths than grown-ups.

Ìý

"All the children who took part in the filming were amazed at the responses to simple questions about world faiths, and enjoyed putting the adults in their place with their own knowledge.

Ìý

"Even I learnt something from them and I am a religious journalist!"

Ìý

The schools that took part in the films are:

  • Monday 26 June
    Meole Brace Junior School (Hinduism)
  • Tuesday 27 June
    Bicton Primary School (Sikhism)
  • Wednesday 28 June
St. Mary's Catholic Primary School, Madeley (Christianity)
  • Thursday 29 June
    Wombridge Primary School (Buddhism)
  • Friday 30 June
Coalbrookdale and Ironbridge Primary School (Judaism)
  • Saturday 1 July
    Muxton Primary School (Islam)
