The nominations for this year's Frank Gillard Awards have been announced today.
Ìý
A record number of 25 stations have achieved nominations in the awards which celebrate ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Local Radio.
Ìý
ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ London 94.9 leads the field by being nominated in five categories and
ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio Berkshire with three will be hoping that lightning can strike twice - last
year the station converted all three of its nominations to gold.
Ìý
In the Breakfast category ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ London 94.9's Jono and Jo Breakfast Show pits its
metropolitan strength against the breakfast offerings of Mark Cummings from
ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio Gloucestershire and Rod Whiting of ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio Lincolnshire.
Ìý
ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ London 94.9 also features in the Coverage of a News Story category where its
rolling news coverage of July 7 2005 is up against ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio Shropshire's
Herceptin story and the Danielle Beccan murder trial from ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio Nottingham.
Ìý
For the Programme Presenter award, Nick Pandolfi from ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio Suffolk is
hoping to repeat his 2004 success in 2006 if he can hold off ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio
Sheffield's Toby Foster or ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio Northampton's Bernie Keith.
Ìý
This year's Sony Community Award winner, the mental health campaign Hearing
Voices from ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Hereford and Worcester, is hoping for a Gillard Gold to add to
its trophy cabinet in the Social Action category.
Ìý
Other nominations are
for ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio Cornwall's Sea Sense and ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio Lancashire's Rice Appeal.
Ìý
There will be a new name on the prestigious Station of the Year award - none of the three nominated stations has won it in the seven years of the
Frank Gillard Awards.
Ìý
ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ London 94.9 gained bronze in 2004 but ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio
Manchester and ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio Berkshire are new to the category.
Ìý
The winners will be announced on 28 September at the Gillard Awards
dinner in Windermere, Cumbria.
Ìý
Richard Bilton will
be the ceremony presenter and ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Deputy Director-General, Mark Byford, will
present the coveted miniature busts of Frank Gillard to the winners.
