The ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ formally opens its largest news bureau in Latin America on
Tuesday 12 September 2006.

The bureau is located in the Brazilian-British Centre in
Pinheiros, São Paulo, Brazil and will be staffed by eight journalists, most coming from
the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Brasil offices in London.
Ìý
The new bureau is part of ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Brasil's
restructuring programme which includes increased investments in online, video
and TV partnerships.

In addition to ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Brasil staff there will be a ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ News Correspondent covering
Brazil for the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½'s UK domestic news services.

Américo Martins, Head of ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Brasil, said: "This new bureau and the related
investments demonstrate just how important Brazil and Latin America is to the
ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½'s news operation.

"It means we can significantly expand our coverage in
Brazil and relay in-depth information to ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Brazilian partners and ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½
programmes worldwide.

"Additionally, we will be producing more features on
Brazil and Latin America for our popular online site bbcbrasil.com."

An official opening ceremony on 12 September will be attended
by Lucio Mesquita, Regional Head, Americas and Europe, ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ World Service;
Américo Martins, Head of ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Brasil; Asdrubal Figueiro, Editor of the new ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½
Brasil bureau in Sao Paulo; and Vin Ray, Director of the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½'s College of
Journalism, which provides tailored training programme for ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ journalists.

Vin Ray will also be attending the Latin-American Colloquium on Media
Observation which is supported by ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Brasil.
