ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Big Screen in Derby officially launches with Puccini's Tosca


To celebrate the official launch of the Derby Big Screen an exclusive live-feed of Tosca – Puccini's epic story of love, politics and tragedy – from the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London, is being screened on Tuesday 3 July.

The grand opening of what is the only ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Big Screen in the East Midlands kicks off at 7pm, when ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ East Midlands Today's Kathy Rochford introduces the Derby New Opera Company performing excerpts from a variety of operas, including Tosca.

Then at 7.20pm, the Derby Big Screen goes live to the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden for an introduction to the evening's extravaganza by Derby-born presenter and former principal dancer with the Royal Ballet, Deborah Bull, with the live-feed of Puccini's Tosca beginning at 7.30pm.

Standing seven metres high, with a screen 26 metres square, the Derby Big Screen is set to become a fantastic attraction for Derby.

Positioned in front of the Tourist Information Centre, visitors will be able to watch the Big Screen every day with its mixture of ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ programming, local news and information.

Ìý

The Derby Big Screen also offers local people an atmospheric venue to share in great national occasions, such as Wimbledon and the forthcoming Live Earth concert.

Ìý

Local film-makers, charities and community groups can showcase their work to passers-by and those sitting outside in the sunshine.

Ìý

The Big Screen is a partnership between the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½, Derby City Council and the University of Derby.

Mike Gibbons, Project Director, ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Live Events, says: "The ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ is delighted to welcome Derby to the Public Space Broadcasting network.
