ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ World Service marks Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday


ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ World Service will commemorate Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday this Friday (18 July) with a day of programmes focusing on Mandela's legacy and the future of South Africa.

Programmes include live broadcasts throughout the day from Robben island; incisive interviews with politicians, former political prisoners and prison guards; and a special edition of the interactive discussion programme World Have Your Say, broadcast from a Soweto restaurant.

Guests/interviewees

  • Helen Zille, Mayor of Cape Town and leader of the Democratic Alliance party.
  • Kumi Naidoo, Secretary-general and CEO of Civicus, the worldwide alliance for citizen participation.
  • Kwedi Mkalipi, Pan Africanist Congress leader and former political prisoner who served time on Robben Island.
  • Patricia de Lille, Leader of the Independent Democrats - number 22 in a list of the top 100 South Africans.
  • Denis Goldberg, anti-apartheid campaigner. He was once given four life sentences.
  • Francois Pienaar, former South African rugby captain. Mandela is godfather to one of his sons.
  • Ahmed Kathadra, anti-apartheid activist and former political prisoner who spent 18 years imprisoned on Robben Island.

Programmes

  • World Today (6.00-7.00am): interviews with a former political prisoner and former prison guard.
  • Outlook (1.30- 2.00pm): throughout the week Outlook has been speaking to the people who make up the "Mandela Machine". They include Zelda La Grange, his formidable personal assistant and his lawyer Arthur Chaskalson.
  • Newshour (2.00-3.00pm): Judge Figele Bam - served on Robben Island at the same time as Nelson Mandela and shares a birthday with him. This year Judge Bam will join Nelson Mandela at his home in the Transkei for the birthday celebration.
  • World Have Your Say (6.00-7.00pm): participants include: Kumi Naidoo; Lionel David; Kwedi Mkphalipi; Patricia de Lille; and Archbishop Ndungane, together with an invited audience of former wardens, political prisoners and current residents of Robben Island.
