Tom Archer appointed Controller of Factual Production, ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Vision

Peter Salmon, Chief Creative Officer, ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Vision Productions, announced today that Tom Archer has been confirmed in the post of Controller, Factual Production, ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Vision having been acting in the role since May.

Ìý

Based in Bristol, he will have overall responsibility for the factual production departments in London, Bristol, Birmingham and Manchester with a portfolio of programmes ranging from the Natural History Unit's output, to Watchdog, Horizon, Gardeners' World, Songs Of Praise and The One Show.

Ìý

Peter Salmon says: "Tom is a brilliant and proven leader. He runs happy and successful teams committed to innovation and quality and has had a strong career throughout the UK factual sector in both commissioning and production.

Ìý

"Factual programme makers have been through some tough times at the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ but have emerged as a strong fighting force on every front.

Ìý

"I am optimistic that our teams all over the UK will benefit from his experience and wisdom."

Ìý

Jana Bennett, Director, ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Vision, adds: "The Bristol factual unit under Tom Archer's leadership was enormously successful.

Ìý

"Together with his experience of programme making Tom also brings to this role his experience as a commissioner and a deep understanding of the genre.

Ìý

"He is 100% committed to in-house production and is determined to see it flourish right across the UK.

Ìý

"In his role as Controller of Factual Productions Tom will be responsible for bringing all the factual content making areas across the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ together."

Ìý

Tom Archer says: "My aim is to make sure the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½'s own factual departments are world class, like the Natural History Unit, bringing the audience the most fantastic experiences we can create, and to do that at a time of unprecedented change in both how programmes are made and how we choose to watch them."

Ìý

In addition to the Acting Controller role (following Keith Scholey's departure), Tom has remained as Head of ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Vision's Documentaries and Features Department in Bristol but will now relinquish those responsibilities, and that post will be advertised shortly.

Ìý

In Bristol he has executive produced a variety of programmes ranging from Great Britons and Ray Mears to Antiques Roadshow and DIY SOS.

Ìý

Last year the department won both the Grierson and RTS awards for best documentary series with Anatomy Of A Crime.

Ìý

Tom also worked as the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½'s Commissioner for Documentaries and Contemporary Factual, and was responsible for commissioning long-running hits such as Coast, Tribe, Who Do You Think You Are? and Grumpy Old Men.

Ìý

Before joining the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ in 2002, Tom was Controller of Granada Bristol (formerly United Productions), creating their specialist documentary department, which made history series for ITV and ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Two, plus the David Starkey series Elizabeth and Six Wives Of Henry VIII for Channel 4.

Ìý

Prior to that he was an investigative journalist and led the Channel 4 Dispatches team in their high-profile investigation of the Bristol baby heart surgery scandal.
