Tony Ageh appointed ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ÌýController of Archive Development

The ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½'s Director of Archive Content Roly Keating has made his first appointment, with former ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Controller, Internet Tony Ageh joining his team as Controller of Archive Development.

Ìý

The ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½'s Archive Content team has been set up to maximise on-demand access to the world's largest audiovisual archive on public service and commercial platforms and through external partners.

Ìý

Working with Roly and colleagues across the whole of the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½, Tony will play a key role in developing the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½'s archive strategy, with specific responsibility for developing ways of making the archive easily understandable and accessible to users.

Ìý

He will also work with external partners on archive collaborations, and develop common standards and policies which can be used across all ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ archive activities.

Ìý

Roly Keating says: "Tony has a great track record as a strategic innovator in both print and on-line media.

Ìý

"Among other achievements, it was Tony's original thinking which led to the concept of a page for every programme on bbc.co.uk, and to the original conception of the iPlayer, which he led to its Beta launch last year.

Ìý

"With his passion for public service and talent for long term thinking, he has a huge contribution to make in helping the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ unlock the full potential of the archives."

Ìý

Tony Ageh says: "The ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½'s archive contains three generations of the UK's heritage and culture, recorded and preserved in an unprecedented manner on a scale that does not exist anywhere else.

Ìý

"I am looking forward to working with Roly to unlock that treasure, developing new journeys through it and building creative partnerships both inside and outside the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½. It is a fantastic opportunity."

Ìý

Tony Ageh has held various roles at the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ since he joined in 2002.

Ìý

As Controller, Internet he was responsible for the creation and delivery of the hugely successful ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ iPlayer, as well as leading the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½'s programme pages project and driving the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½'s move into on-demand.

Ìý

He was previously publisher of upmystreet.com – where he developed one of the UK's most visited local information websites – and pioneered WAP location-based services.

Ìý

As Creative Director of virgin.net he was responsible for all product and content development for the start-up ISP.

Ìý

Before joining virgin.net, Tony was Creative Director for Guardian Newspapers where he set up and led the team which created The Guide, G2, Weekend and WiReD UK.
