The new film inspired by the true story of ‘the world’s worst spy’

5 July 2019

The Lousiest Spy is a film by Glasgow-based Rhona Mühlebach, inspired by the story of Augusto Roggen — a man considered by some to be the world’s worst spy.

Part of Now and Next, it tells the story of how Roggen, a Uruguayan citizen, came to Loch Lomondside in the summer of 1915, registering with the local police station on his arrival.

Bizarrely, Roggen told police he had been held under suspicion of being a spy whilst in Germany. Intelligence that Roggen had sent postcards to a known espionage address in Holland raised suspicion further, resulting in a raid of his hotel room.

Finding a gun, ammunition, invisible ink and suspicious contact details, police arrested Roggen and he was sentenced to death by shooting at the Tower of London.
