Classic stories from Shieldinch are available to watch again.

The original cast of River City

The year was 2002: Jack McConnell was Scotland’s first minister; Atomic Kitten topped the charts; and Lord of the Rings ruled at the box office. Meanwhile, on the small screen, a brand new soap was launched.

Set in Shieldinch, a fictional district of Glasgow, River City focused on the day to day relationships of people living in and around Montego Street.

The show began with the wedding of Eileen and Raymond, and over the following years grew to incorporate interwoven tales of family feuds, tragedy and heartbreak, while never forgetting to provide romance and laughs along the way.

Lorraine Kelly, Judy Murray and Scott Mills count themselves as fans. The Radio One DJ for River City to be aired south of the border and even bagged himself a cameo role on the show.

Almost anyone who’s anyone in the Scottish acting world has graced the Dumbarton set, including Sam Heughan, Lorraine McIntosh and Gray O’Brien. And the show even attracted the talents of Neighbours star, Stefan Dennis, who took the lead in a shocking storyline.

Two of his key episodes will be shown again as part of River City Rewind, which offers a chance to relive some of the classic episodes that tell the history of Shieldinch.

Over the next few weeks, defining moments in the lives of the soap's best-loved – and most reviled – residents will be played out over ten classic episodes. For long-term fans it's a chance to relive some of the programme's unmissable moments, while newer recruits can discover some of the scenes that shaped the show.

Featured among the episodes are iconic storylines including the accidental death of villainous Archie, the much-loved wedding of Malcolm and Liz, and a devastating explosion in the Tall Ship.

Filming of River City is currently on hold due to Covid-19 restrictions, but the drama will return later in the year.
