Must Watch reviews: ‘Such Brave Girls’

Every week, the Must Watch podcasters review the biggest TV and streaming shows.

This week, Scott Bryan and Hayley Campbell review Such Brave Girls.

Such Brave Girls returned the other week on ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Three for its second series. A dark comedy about two sisters, Josie and Billie, and their overbearing mum, Deb, navigating love, trauma, and total emotional chaos.

Set against a backdrop of mental health struggles and questionable life choices, the first series won a Bafta last year.

But what will the team make of it?

Must Watch reviews: Such Brave Girls

Scott Bryan and Hayley Campbell give their views on Such Brave Girls

Naga: "Must watch Scott?"

Scott: "Absolutely! Firstly, congratulations on finding a 38 second clip that is suitable to play on radio. Honestly, this is one of the filthiest and rudest and outrageous shows on TV, but I absolutely love it!"

Naga: "I was intrigued as to how we would review it."

Scott: "Yeh…"

Naga: "Or you would review it should I say…"

Scott: “Because sometimes I would mention a quote from a show that really made me laugh to highlight the kind of humour that would be in it, but with this show, it’s practically impossible to do on the radio.

Not a scene is wasted, not a line of dialogue is wasted"

“I think it’s the fact that there is something so authentic, the fact that you’ve got Lizzie and Kat, real life sisters playing these roles, but it’s also the fact that it defies your expectations constantly, because normally any show that looks at someone experiencing a deterioration of their mental health and trying to overcome their trauma, is set within the similar parameters of heartfelt, emotional, empathy and this just basically jumps on it and kicks it to the curb.

“There are so many characters who are self-involved, obsessive, doing the absolute worst things imaginable in this situation and yet you somehow still root for them, but I think it’s also… firstly, sublime one liners.

“It’s also the fact that not a scene is wasted, not a line of dialogue is wasted.

“My only gripe about this show I think, is whether it’s been given enough prominence, the series dropped the other week, it has been airing on ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Three, but it’s actually been airing on ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ One at 1am and I’ve been thinking to myself why has this not been given a 9pm slot on a Friday…”

Naga: “The kitchen scene in the first episode is definitely post 9pm…”

Scott: “Absolutely, I'm not in any way saying it should be shown before that, but I'm saying this should be front and centre of the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½’s comedy offering, particularly the fact that it’s won a BAFTA.”

“I have a list of my favourite shows of the year that I update throughout the year, it’s got Big Boys on it, it’s got Toxic Town on it, it’s got Adolescents on it and this show’s on it.”

Naga: “Hayley?”

Hayley: “Yes this is a must watch. The first series was one of my best shows of 2023. I loved it, because it’s very dark, but very, very funny.

“There are jokes about sex, death, abortion, suicide. It reminded me of Nighty Night, a show that long time listeners will know is my…”

Scott: “Also filthily rude.”

Hayley: “Yeah, and it’s in my TV Hall of Fame. And also Pulling, the Sharon Horgan show that she did long ago…”

Scott: “Really propelled her career, yeh…”

Hayley: “This one is not trying to trojan horse a message in or teach you anything, it’s purely funny, gross and unexpected, and because everyone is this damaged egomaniac, who doesn’t act in any way that is predictable, it’s a show where anything could happen.

I thought the second series did not disappoint"

“It could go anywhere.

“I thought the second series did not disappoint and to watch this in the same day as Too Much, really highlighted how forced the jokes were in Too Much, because…”

Scott: “You really don’t like Too Much…”

Hayley: “No I really don’t, but the jokes in Such Brave Girls just fall out all over the place, because there’s so many and they’re so earned and they’re so good.

“The story in this season is like an extreme modern version of period dramas, the ones with the bonnets, where all the women have to try and get married off to survive.

“In Such Brave Girls they’re trying to attach themselves like leeches to any man who has a job or a big house. It’s horrible and it’s great.”

Naga: “It is horrible, it is horrible!”

Hayley: “You’re doing a face…”

Scott: “You’ve got to love this one.”

Hayley: “Did you watch any of the first series?”

Naga: “No.”

Scott: “You’ve got to, you have to…”

Naga: “So I watched the first episode of this series and I can see what it was doing, I just got a bit bored.”

Scott: “No! I’m not taking this!”

Naga: “I just got bored of the onslaught of…”

Hayley: “You’re going to regret this…”

Naga: “I might, I found them deliciously horrible and then I got bored of their delicious horribleness.”

Scott: “Absolutely not!”

Naga: “It’s not my job to review things, that’s absolutely fine! It’s my job to facilitate this program, which I’m very happy to do, that I do well.

“I admire them for putting this out there and it being all so ugly, I just got a bit bored.”

Hayley: “No. Disqualified.”

All six episodes of 'Such Brave Girls' are available to watch on ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ iPlayer now.

We had an email from Charly on Etoile…

"Another show I’ve surprisingly enjoyed on Prime is ‘Etoile’. Set in the world of Ballet & starring Charlotte Gainsbourg & Simon Callow among others, I was dubious.

"As an ex dancer, I feel it is hard to replicate this world on screen but they have done well, & although it is full of stereotypes & not the best acting (Callow hamming it up beautifully) the script is funny & locations are stunning."

Tim emailed in…

"Loved Dept Q and, as Slow Horses did, will inspire me to read the books.

"One thing I didn't get though was the excessive violence in the last episode. For those who get there, it went up about 100 notches from anything earlier. Just seemed unnecessary as definitely more graphic than the norm for this genre."

Rupert wrote to us talking about Dept Q…

"Due to your glowing review for Dept Q, my wife and I settled in for the first episode last night. We enjoyed it very much.
However, there is a LOT of swearing.

"You have been very honest in the past, Naga, about your views on swearing and neither of us are averse to the odd well-chosen epithet or even, as in the likes of Peaky Blinders and Rogue Heroes, for a few characters to be extra sweary.

"But, occasionally, as in this instance, there is such a barrage of unnecessary "casual" swearing that it rather takes us out of the story."
