What is a Privacy Notice?
A Privacy Notice tells you what personal data the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ collects about you, how we use it, and your legal rights. Personal data means anything that can identify you, like your name, address, or picture. This notice is written for kids and teens, but you might want to read it with your parent or guardian.
Why are we doing this and how can you take part?
The ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ wants 12 to 18-year-olds across the UK to create their own music for the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Young Composer 2025 competition.
Winners will:
• Get mentored by a professional composer with the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Concert Orchestra.
• Have their music recorded for broadcast.
• Have their names featured on the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Young Composer web pages
Your teacher can enter you into the competition, but they need permission from your parent or guardian.
If you're 17 or older, you can sign up for our mailing list to get more info from Young Composer. Just tick the box on the online form confirming you want to be added. Your parent, guardian, or teacher can also sign up to the mailing list.
The ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ will collect your personal data using an online platform.
If you or your music appears on TV or radio, it will be available online and on demand. It might be used again in future broadcasts or on the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½’s social media channels.

Why do we collect and how do we use your personal data?
We only collect your personal data when we need it to do our job or to follow the law.
Your personal data
We will collect:
• Full name
• Date of birth
• Gender (optional)
• Email address (if you’re 16 or over)
• Location
• City, county, and postcode of your school/college/university
• Your composition and its title
• A photo of you (if you are shortlisted)
• Biographical info about you (if you are shortlisted)
Special category information
We might collect:
• Race or ethnicity data (optional)
Your parent/guardian’s and/or teacher’s personal data
We will also collect some of your parent/guardian’s personal data so we can contact them if needed:
• Name
• Email address
• Contact phone number
Who looks after your personal data?
The ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ is in charge of your personal data. We have a Data Protection Officer who makes sure we follow the law. If you have questions, email DataProtection.Officer@bbc.co.uk.
The rules we follow
The ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ follows data protection rules when we collect and use your personal data. We collect your information for the Young Composer Competition 2025 because it helps the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ inform, educate, and entertain. We use a rule (these rules are called a ‘lawful basis’) that is called ‘public task’ to process your data.
We use your special category information because it helps us do the same. The rule we follow when we process this data is called ‘substantial public interest’ that is based on ‘statutory and governmental purposes;.
We have to keep the personal data of winners and their parent/guardian to prove the competition was fair. The rule we follow here is called ‘legal obligation’.
If you tick the box to be added to our mailing list, we use your consent. You can unsubscribe anytime by using the unsubscribe link in our emails or contacting young.composer@bbc.co.uk.
Will your personal data be shared?
We only share your information when we need to do our job or when the law says we have to. Anyone we share it with must keep it safe and only use it as we tell them.
How long will we keep your personal data?
We will keep your personal data for nine months after the competition ends and then delete it.
If you appear on a programme, the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ will keep it forever.
We will keep the personal data of winners and their parent/guardian for two years to prove the competition was fair before we delete it.
Your personal data will be stored in the UK and the European Economic Area (EEA).
What are your rights?
You and your parents/guardians have the right to:
• Know how we use your personal data.
• See the personal data we have.
• Ask us to change data you think is wrong.
• Ask us to delete data when it's not needed anymore.
• Ask us not to use your information in certain ways.
• In certain circumstances, tell us you don't want your data to be used.
