South-East London MC Tinie Tempah’s debut single, ‘Pass Out’ - released in February 2010 - was officially revealed as 1Xtra’s favourite track of the past 20 years on DJ Target’s 1Xtra’s Takeover Show.

I'm gassed! Number 1 homegrown track of the century! Wow, thank you all so much. Big up DJ Target, big up 1Xtra, you already know... big up everyone who has been following my journey!
Tinie Tempah

‘Pass Out’ was produced by (then unknown) music producer extraordinaire Labrinth (who’s also responsible for the awesome Euphoria soundtrack) and came out in the UK in February 2010, going straight to the top of the charts, heralding another shift in crossover of Black music to a wider market. The single married the rich Black British music scene - drum'n'bass, UK hip hop and grime - with dance music; with its punchy futuristic bassline and equally forward-facing video - the song was ahead of its time.

Speaking to The Sun newspaper in 2010, the rapper describes the song as being about "Getting so out of it that you pass out. It was literally just supposed to be a track on the album influenced by all the wild and exciting times I’ve had. But people warmed to it.”

Such was the success of Pass Out, that it won the coveted British Single of the Year accolade at the 2011 Brit Awards and Best Contemporary Song at the 2011 Ivor Novello Awards. Pass Out was the lead single from Tinie’s debut album 2011 Disc-Overy, which entered the UK Official Albums Chart at the top spot - Tinie has since gone on to grow his Disturbin' London record label and movement.
