Winner 9-13: When the Chips are Down, I'm all at Sea: A Seagull in Lockdown by Maria Fettes

The golden days...yes; I owned this town! Strutting like a gangster, 'Stayin' Alive' was my anthem. Always intimidating; my reputation preceded me. Yes, I was one heck of a seagull. People cowered in fear, begging my gang to spare their shiny vehicles from the faecal grenades we loved to launch. Our game was simple; ten points if you struck a hapless human and fifty if you made a child cry! Chip theft was a winning tactic. We screamed our combat cry and charged into battle. We owned this town for sure. Well, until March 23rd 2020…

They say early bird gets the worm; I was never an early bird. Litterbug humans discarding the remains of carry-outs always provided me with calorie-laden breakfasts.

This morning my stomach awoke me as usual and stretching my wings I flew towards Newcastle to feast on the left-overs. Instinctively, on landing, I knew something was wrong. The town, usually bustling with life, was deserted. No movement, no laughter, just silence. What was happening? Hunger pangs ricocheted around my stomach. I needed to find food and fast.

Bin after bin empty! Where had the humans gone?

Suddenly, I found myself strangely drawn towards the sea. My reptilian brain had flicked a switch and starvation lured me towards the sparking water. My legs waddled seaward of their own accord. Was I actually going to fish?

Suddenly, wings spread I flew over the waves, my eyes targeting moving shadows below. I dived downwards speedily until the icy water submerged me. Surfacing, I inhaled the fresh, cool air. It was exhilarating. I plunged deeper; my talons hooked a wriggly fish! Score!

I have never felt so alive -so free! Now feeding on the clifftop, master of all I survey, I’ve finally found my rightful place, my home!

Business Crocodile by Luca McIvor

Runner-up 9-13 category. Read by Richard Sherwood. Illustration by Alice McMullan.

Business Croc hated working from home, it made him grumpy. For the past few months he hadn't done much business because he could only leave his home for short periods due to the drought. Crocodiles needed rain and wet weather in which to travel about, meet customers and do business.

Every morning Business Croc would dress up in his best business suit, eat his breakfast of Worms an Bugs cereal, brush his teeth and look out of the window hoping for rain and wet weather. But for the past few months the weather had only been sunny and dry. The only way Business Croc could go outside for any length of time, was if he stood under the shower for a while, in his business suit, letting the water soak into his skin. So after yet another sunny and dry morning, Business Croc did just that and after being thoroughly soaked, set off out the door of his house to do some business.

Business Croc loved meeting customers and talking business. He hadn't met his sales team in a while so instead of going home, after his business suit and skin had dried, he would meet his sales team in the local swimming pool in order to talk business.

The sales team of elephants, tigers, gorillas, giraffes and zebras all gathered together in the swimming pool with Business Croc dressed in his suit, with his sales board behind him. Business Croc smiled, he loved business. He began talking about sales, growth, targets, customers and profits whilst pointing at the graphs and business words on his board behind him, in the pool.

The meeting ended and Business Croc went for a swim before going home with his business suit dripping. 'A good day of business' he thought and smiled again.

The House with Character by Aoife O'Neill

Runner-up 9-13 category. Read by Sarah Lyle. Illustration by Kit Rees.

Freya and Jordan are crying at the kitchen table, they are moving to a smaller house as their dad has lost his job. Meanwhile the house is coming up with a devious plan to keep its beloved owners.

Next morning the Roberts family are coming to see the house, as it has stables for Lucy's horses and a swimming pool for David. (The Robert's are two very spoilt children).

When the Roberts arrive David heads straight to the swimming pool, as he jumps into the pool the clean water turns into green sticky slime and he gets stuck. David then starts shouting for his mummy and daddy.

Mr Roberts goes into a room which he says could be his study and as he goes to sit down the chair suddenly moves and he falls with a bang on his bottom.

Mrs Roberts goes to explore the master bedroom, she admires herself in the full length mirror, but she begins to look really, really, really FAT! This is Mrs Roberts worst nightmare as she spends all her time playing tennis and doing goat yoga to keep herself in shape. She runs screaming in horror!

Meeting Mr Roberts in the living room, both of them sit on the sofa and exchange their unusual experiences.

Meanwhile, Lucy goes to look at the stables and falls into horse poo and ruins her dress. The poo begins to move and turns into a sticky poo monster that chases Lucy out the gate, just as David is spat out of the slime pool and lands beside her. They both watch in horror as their parents are ejected from a skylight, screaming arms and legs dangling in the air.

The house chuckles to itself...well the Roberts did ask for a house with character!
