Must Watch reviews: The Last of Us
Every week, the Must Watch podcasters review the biggest TV and streaming shows.
This week, Hayley Campbell and Scott Bryan join Naga Munchetty to review The Last of Us.
Starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, the post apocalyptic thriller about zombie-like creatures continues, with the plot now following the sequel to the original game that the series is based on.

What do the Must Watch reviewers think of ‘The Last of Us’?
Scott Bryan and Hayley Campbell give their views on ‘The Last of Us’.
Naga: “Hayley, is it a Must Watch?”
I really think The Last of Us is special"
Hayley: “I think I can say with total confidence that this is a must watch because I fully trust the writer Craig Mazin, who wrote the previous series. He also made Chernobyl, which was a show we loved on Must Watch.
“I really think The Last of Us is special. I think it's one of those rare shows that will please long-time fans of the game and also, non-gamer fans like me because it's in itself great.
“It has HBO money, so it looks and feels amazing, and it sticks to the plot of the video game but things that were minor plot points are expanded.
“So I think it does that thing that a good adaptation does, which is make itself worthy in itself. It's not just an animation or a real life version of the thing you already played.”

Hayley: “Well, I'm not spoiling anything, obviously, but the first scene is Pedro Pascal wearing glasses and fixing something. So I feel that this season might be too erotic for me.
“It's great. There are new characters, there are new threats. And the fact that the last season ended with the biggest lie Joel's ever told is right at the heart of everything that's about to happen.
“It’s all through the first episode, which is the only one I’ve watched so far because I want to save it so I have something to live for.”

Naga: “I've been looking at the publicity running up to this and the two main actors obviously doing a lot. They seem to get on, but really passionate about this as well.
“They've put a lot of effort into kind of getting this second series because people would have... because I was pleasantly surprised by the first series thinking this is going to be a load of rot, basically. Apocalyptic rot. Yeah.”

Scott: “But there's also been so many failures in video game adaptations. We've reviewed many over the years.
"I think it's incredibly hard to make them human, if that makes sense, but also get over the hurdle that Hayley was talking about, whether it feels as if you're playing a level rather than actually watching a plot spill out. And no spoilers with series two.
“It is a must watch for me. There are more central characters in the second series so far. So, the dynamics change, because in the first series, it was very much like here's Joel and Ellie doing this, here's Joel going here, here's Joel and Ellie now facing this sort of obstacle and now it feels a bit more it's much more like other prestige dramas in terms of there being more central characters."

Scott: “I think also just the look of it is just on point because Craig Mazin from Chernobyl, he's managed to carry over that apocalyptic... kind of cinematography and the hauntingness of it in such a kind of natural way in this show The Last of Us, because it opens with these two giraffes having a bit of food and you're going, 'why are there giraffes here'? Only to realise that they are from a zoo that they must have escaped from in this post-apocalyptic…”
The look of it is just on point"
“And the main thing I'm happy about is that this is based on the second book. So far, the creators of the show have said that they have no plans to go beyond the video game. Hopefully, we're not going to have a Game of Thrones circumstance where they're on the train still putting down the track at the same time.
“So for now, they've said at least for this series, and I think they've announced another series too, it's just going to be basically carrying on with the video game.”

Naga: “Do you have to have seen series one?”
Hayley: “Yes you do.”
Naga: “But I think that's a bit of a turn-off for a lot of people.”
Hayley: “Well, I think that's silly. I think in the age of…”
Naga: “Hold on a minute.”
Hayley: “No, you've put forward this argument before and I think it's ridiculous.”
Naga: “Why?”
Hayley: "Because... In the land of streaming, it's right there. It's not like you missed the TV show in the 90s and your mum didn't tape it on the video so you can't watch it. It is right there and it's great so you should. So it shouldn't feel like, oh I have to watch this. You get to watch it.”
Naga: “Sometimes if you don't have the time and you want to be part of the conversation with this series it is too much.”
Hayley: “You have to put something in to get something out.”
The first episode of The Last of Us season 2 is available to watch on Sky Atlantic and the streaming service NOW, with a new episode available every Monday morning at 2am.

Richard in Manchester told us about his ‘Must Watch’ show…
“My current Must Watch is 'Black Snow' series 1 & 2 - available on the iPlayer.
"Terrific Aussie Missing Persons cop show, with the truly excellent Travis Fimmel as the lead (Ragnar in the wonderful 'Vikings' series - literally a heroic performance!) emotionally & culturally engaging, the investigation process a deep-dive into the lives of people, whilst Sgt Cormack (Fimmel) also mourns and searches for his missing little brother; the heaviness and sadness (and brutal self-harm) alleviated by some hilarious comments and gestures, as Cormack pursues the truth.
"I am really enjoying 'Black Snow' as another overseas gem that the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ has landed for us.”
Zoe got in touch to say that she stumbled across ‘Bref’ season 2 on Disney…
“I don’t know how to see Season 1, a multitude of 2 minute episodes from 2011 apparently.
"This is the first foreign language show I keep going back to dubbing because the speech is so fast and the dubbing isn’t annoying.
"It’s just been a fast rollercoaster of joy, intelligence, humour and human experience and I’m only halfway through episode 3.”
Sarah said she’s been listening to one of our listeners asking for recommendations for German TV programs…
“I would recommend Babylon Berlin. The 4th series is being shown on the Australian SBS channel which has many non-English languages programs.
"Babylon Berlin is set in the period before the Nazis come to power. It shows many aspects of life and its effect on characters’ lives. There will be a 5th series and I am already wondering how the main characters will survive it.”
And finally,
Anais got in touch recommending watching ‘The Breakthrough’ on Netflix.
