Janet Beat
JANET BEAT (born 1937) studied music at Birmingham University. She won the G.D. Cunningham Award which she used for post-graduate research in Italy. Then followed some composition encouragement from Alexander Goehr. During the 1960s she spent some time as a freelance orchestral player before taking up a lectureship in 1965. She became involved with electronic music in the late 1950s, and later established the electronic music and recording studios for the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama where she joined the staff in 1972. In 1992 she was the Visiting - Composer at the Meistersingerkonservatorium in Nuremberg. Her music has been performed throughout the UK, Europe and the Americas. Some of these performances have been at major music festivals, and she was the featured composer at Tage neuer Musik in 1992. There have also been broadcasts and record releases. She has received commissions from the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Scottish Ballet and the Scottish Postal Board, ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½TV, International Film Associates, the London Musicians' Collective and Paradise Mislaid among others. Her music publisher is Furore Verlag, Kassel. Her activities have included being a founder and council member of the Scottish Society of Composers, one of the directors of the Scottish Electro-Acoustic Music Association, founder and artistic director of the electro-acoustic ensemble Soundstrata, editor of Baroque music, writer, broadcaster and music critic.
