Seamus Heaney - Poet
Gavin Esler talks to Irish poet Seamus Heaney about his decision to not take sides in the Troubles and his belief that poetry can offer comfort in a world blighted by violence.
Seamus Heaney, whose funeral has taken place in Dublin, was described as having all the attributes of a great poet. Perhaps the greatest achievement of the Nobel Literature Laureate, in a hard prosaic world, was reminding us that poetry is not a guilty pleasure or an optional extra but something many of us want and need. Gavin Esler spoke to him in May 2006 about his life and work.
