A former Israeli diplomat, Alon Liel, recently announced to the press that for two years he and two other Israeli officials had been in secret negotiations with well placed Syrian contacts about a possible peace deal. But the talks apparently collapsed with Israel's war in Lebanon last year. Stephen Sackur talks to Alon Liel about these back channel talks and asks him if Israel and Syria have any real intention of negotiating an historic peace.
