Gilberto Gil, Brazilian Culture Minister
Musician Gilberto Gil is the Minister of Culture in the government of Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. He talks to Stephen Sackur.
Many musicians dabble in politics, but Gilberto Gil has taken it further than most. In late 1960s Brazil, he was at the heart of the Tropicalia movement, a group of musicians and artists who dared to challenge the military dictatorship. Gil was imprisoned and then exiled to London, where he discovered reggae and started to embrace African culture. Today he is Minister of Culture in the government of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. He talks to Stephen Sackur.
