General Martin Agwai

General Martin Agwai is Commander of UNAMID, the Darfur peace force. Critics say it is failing to protect the civilian population. Stephen Sackur asks why the mission is failing.

General Martin Agwai is Commander of UNAMID, the joint United Nations and African Union force in Darfur. The army is in disarray - operating with half the personnel it needs, and desperately short of equipment. It is vulnerable to attacks from the Sudanese government and warring factions, and critics say it is failing to protect Darfur's civilian population.

African nations are backing Sudan's bid to end the investigation into allegations of war crimes against President Omar al-Bashir, for which the country has been lobbying at the UN general assembly in New York.

Stephen Sackur asks Agwai why his mission is in such a mess.
