Young Gaelic writers consider the possible reintroduction of extinct species into the Highlands.

An EU directive states that animal species once indigenous to, but now extinct from, rural regions of Europe should be reintroduced wherever possible. It's led to a great deal of debate about what is in line for a comeback to the Scottish Highlands.

The lynx has been absent from the Highlands for more than 1000 years. Yet, after the beaver, it is the species perhaps most likely to be reintroduced. A woodland creature, it both shuns human contact and avoids the open fields and hills favoured by sheep. In Rothiemurchus Forest and at the Inchnadamph caves in Sutherland - where lynx bones have been found - Domhnall Uilleam Stiùbhart creates a portrait of this secretive and elusive animal.
